Great Wall of China

One of the seven wonders of the world, the Great Wall of China is a man-made structure that was constructed over two thousand years ago and took about 100 years to complete. The Great Wall of China, one of the greatest wonders of the world, was listed as a World Heritage by UNESCO in 1987. The vastness of this project brings to light the immense capabilities of man. Great Wall of China is a series of stone and earthen fortifications in northern China, built originally to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire against intrusions by various nomadic groups. Several walls have been built since the 5th century BC that are referred to collectively as the Great Wall, which has been rebuilt and maintained from the 5th century BC through the 16th century.

The Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt

The three Great Pyramids of Giza are the most amazing monument the ancient Egyptians left to world. They are the pyramid of “Khufu”, the pyramid of “Khafre” and the pyramid of “Menkaure”. They are considered to be the greatest historical architecture in the world. No wonder, it was the tallest structure in the world for over 3800 years. Also Giza pyramids are the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the World, and the only one to remain largely intact. They were built in the 4th Dynasty of ancient Egypt, about  2550 B.C. They are located in Giza, on the west bank of Nile River near Cairo in the desert.

For many years archaeologists thought that these pyramids were built only  as a tomb for kings & Queens mummified mummies who ruled over Ancient Egypt, but now they discovered that the pyramids not only served as a tomb for the Pharaoh and storage for the various items he would need in the afterlife, but also were constructed for practicing space monitoring and a worship based upon a contact with other universes.

Great Pyramid of Khufu, which was built by the king Khufu is the oldest and largest pyramid. It's now 136m high with each side measuring 229m. It lost 10 meters off the top over the years due to erosion. When it was first completed, the Great Pyramid was 146.7m. It is estimated that 2,300,000 blocks of stone were used to build the Great Pyramid, each weight from 2 to 70 tons.

Colosseum in Rome

The Colosseum, the greatest amphitheatre of the antiquity was built in Rome, Italy, about 1920 years ago. It is considered an architectural and engineering wonder, and remains as a standing proof of both the grandeur and the cruelty of the Roman world.

After the splendour of imperial times, the Colosseum was abandoned, and in turn it became a fortress for the medieval clans of the city, a source of building materials, a picturesque scenery for painters, a place of Christian worship. Today it is a challenge for the archaeologists and a scenario for events and shows.

In this site you'll find information on history, architecture and on the games that were held in the amphitheatre, there are also news on the events in the Colosseum, practical information for a  visit, FAQs, a page of feedback with the most usual questions asked by our readers, and much more, like figures and plans,a sitemap and even a page on the cats of the arena.

Please read this disclaimer: those of you who know about the Roman amphitheatre are kindly requested to do no more than smile at my efforts on these pages, and write me to correct it if you feel so inclined; those of you who come to the subject for the first time should certainly not take my opinions as gospel.

The Sydney Opera House

The Sydney Opera House is a multi-venue performing arts centre on Bennelong Point in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It was conceived and largely built by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, who in 2003 received the Pritzker Prize, architecture's highest honour.

The Concert Hall is within the western group of shells, the Opera Theatre within the eastern group. The scale of the shells was chosen to reflect the internal height requirements, rising from the low entrance spaces, over the seating areas and up to the high stage towers. The minor venues (Drama Theatre, Playhouse, and The Studio) are located beneath the Concert Hall, as part of the western shell group.
A much smaller group of shells set to one side of the Monumental Steps houses the Bennelong Restaurant. Although the roof structures of the Sydney Opera House are commonly referred to as shells (as they are in this article), they are in fact not shells in a strictly structural sense, but are instead precast concrete panels supported by precast concrete ribs.

The Sydney Opera House is an expressionist modern design, with a series of large precast concrete 'shells', each taken from a hemisphere of the same radius, forming the roofs of the structure, set on a monumental podium.

The building covers 1.8 hectares (4.5 acres) of land, and is 183 metres (605 ft) long and 120 metres (388 ft) wide at its widest point. It is supported on 588 concrete piers sunk up to 25 metres below sea level. Its power supply is equivalent to that of a town of 25,000 people, and is distributed by 645 kilometres (401 Miles)of electrical cable.
